The Young Vic is one of London's most prominent theatres. Originally built in 1970 as a temporary venue to house the National Theatre, the theatre was immensely popular among performers and audience members alike.

When the client wanted to refurbish and extend the theatre in 2004 they decided to leave the auditorium intact, but to enhance the stage lighting and audio-visual systems. Key to the project's success is the way in which both old and new parts of the building were carefully blended. New technical facilities were carefully integrated into a very tight site while the essence of the intimate performance spaces was retained.

The reborn theatre has been well received by critics and users, has won several awards and was nominated for the RIBA Sterling Prize for excellence in architecture.
