With 1,158-seats, the Savoy Theatre by C J Phipps is located next to the main entrance of London's famous Savoy Hotel - both were originally built by D'Oyly Carte, the producer of Gilbert & Sullivan Opera. The Basil Ionides Art Deco style theatre interior is a unique 1929 remodelling of an original Victorian Theatre. The theatre is a Grade II listed building. In 1990, a fire completely destroyed the auditorium and left the foyers, bars, and other front-of-house areas badly damaged. Fortunately, the stage and backstage areas were largely unaffected. English Heritage decreed the interior was too precious to lose and must be accurately re-instated. The extraordinary auditorium has been completely restored with loving attention to detail. As part of the rebuilding process, the owners took the opportunity to gut the entire stage house and replace the stage floor, flying system, and safety curtain, and to install a new wiring infrastructure system in the theatre for stage lighting and sound.
