Director of Strategic Development
Connecticut office
Best known as the general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, Joe brings a unique breadth of experience and insight to our clients. This background enables him to advise on all aspects of a project, from conception and design to daily operations and fiscal management. As our senior project advisor, he uses this experience to provide valuable insights to major arts organizations as they move into new facilities or reorganize existing ones.
In addition to his project work, Joe provides his expert counsel to our US operations as a general advisor in all facets of the organization - from guiding our strategic development to acting as a senior advisor to our board.
Joe is the only person to rise through the ranks of the Metropolitan Opera to become its general manager, a position he held for 16 years. Joe began his 42 years with the Met as an apprentice carpenter. He advanced quickly to master carpenter, technical director, and assistant manager before his selection to the top position with the company.
Joe has taught courses on management in the performing arts at NYU Stern School of Business for 5 years and lectures extensively on leadership at universities throughout the U.S. He has received honorary degrees from numerous universities, including Georgetown University, Fordham University, and Hamilton College. Joe is the author of The Toughest Show on Earth, My Rise and Reign at the Metropolitan Opera, published by Random House in 2006.
