The Rose Reborn in Massachusetts
August 20, 2000

The rediscovery of the foundations of the Elizabethan Rose Theatre in London was an archeological and theatrical sensation in 1989.

An article today in the New York Times says that a replica of the Rose is to be built by Tina Packer, artistic director of Shakespeare and Company on their Edith Wharton Estate in Lenox, near Tanglewood.

Theatre Projects' London design director, Iain Mackintosh will be advising on the planning of the Rose and a smaller indoor Founder's Theatre also on the estate.

Iain said : "It's better to build the Rose because we know more about it. Finding the foundations gave us the footprint of the building, its size, dimensions and the way it was sited. The Lenox Rose will hold 800 people, a good size for Shakespeare and company. But also a good size for actors.

This week a group of experts on Elizabethan theatre construction, some of whom were involved in the recent rebuilding of the Globe Theatre in London will gather in Lenox for a five-day seminar.
