Take off with the American Airlines (the ex- Selwyn) Theatre
TPC is proud to have been Theatre Design Consultants to their second project on New York's 42nd Street, the new home of the Roundabout Theatre Company, the now renamed Selwyn Theatre. Originally built in 1918, it re-opens on July 27th 2000.
With Architects Bob Ascione and Fred Basch of Karlsberger Associates, TPC was responsible for the layout of the auditorium interior with its reconfigured seating, improved sightlines, and restored boxes at both circle and orchestra levels. Any restoration of an historic Broadway theatre for drama has to take into account the modern need to play downstage of the proscenium on the apron a condition that was seldom encountered in the 1920's when the Selwyn was built. This involved completely.re-raking both orchestra and balcony seating.
The interior design concept was created by the noted stage designer and associate of TPC: Tony Walton. The design was developed by Francesca Russo incorporating the requirements of the Historic Buildings Commission.
The stage has a new grid and counterweight flying system and the theatre has throughout a new state-of-the-art stage lighting and sound and communications installation.
