Curtain rises on Colston Hall's new foyer space
May 20, 2009
Last weekend saw the sneak preview launch of the new foyer development of Bristol's celebrated Colston Hall. Theatre Projects have been working with Levitt Bernstein Architects and Kirkegaard Associates to improve the front-of-house provision at this popular music venue.
The new foyer areas will offer much more than a pre-concert space, providing new performance areas, rehearsal rooms and educationfacilities, as well as a new box office, café bar, and improveddisabled access.
Colston Hall has been a concert venue since 1867 and has been designated a grade II listed building. The new foyer building is the first part of a three-phase project which will also see the restoration of the High Victorian Lesser Hall building and the expansion and improvement of backstage areas.
The stylish glass-fronted new foyer development has an independent architectural identity to the existing building, effectively adding a new and vibrant atmosphere to the historic venue. It also seamlessly integrates the new foyer to the existing building and auditorium by a series of bridges, while its new performance spaces offer visitors a more informal experience of seeing live performances at the venue.
To mark the opening of the new foyer in September, Colston Hall is celebrating with a diverse range of events for ten days. To see what's on at the Colston Hall, click here.
